A month to take your next step. As a Maker for a Month, you will spend two consecutive weeks working from a specific research question on a creative process that is already underway. You will also spend two weeks at the TENT office, working on a professional development question before and after your residency. As part of the trajectory, you will share your artistic research with an invited audience, and we expect you to return at a later stage to present your work as part of Back to Base.

Taking the next step in your artistic practice requires more than time in the studio. Through Maker for a Month, TENT supports artists in both their artistic research and the further development of their professional practice. The residency weeks offer space for artistic research, experimentation and creation. During this period, TENT provides production, artistic and technical support, along with a creation and travel budget.

Maker for a Month is intended for circus artists whose professional practice is based in the Netherlands and who have experience both creating and performing their own work. You have a concrete plan for a new performance or are already well underway in the creative process. In the studio, you will work from a specific research question. During the weeks at TENT’s office, you will focus on a professional development question relating to your artistic practice. TENT will act as a sounding board for questions concerning production, business, technical matters and communications. In advance and in consultation with TENT, you will determine what you want to explore during the month, what you hope to learn from TENT and when the different weeks will take place. These do not have to immediately precede or follow the residency. In the selection process, we consider how you think and conduct research through circus, and how your work relates to a broader context. We also consider your professional development question: can you clearly articulate where you want to take the next step as an artist.
